Florida PEP Reimbursement Denied? Here Are the Most Common Reasons

Most PEP denials are caused by missing receipt details, specifically the last 4 digits of the payment card. See the full list and how to fix each one.

Florida PEP reimbursements are most often denied because of missing receipt details, specifically the last 4 digits of the payment card, no educational benefit description, or a purchase made before the SLP was approved. These are fixable problems, but they cost you weeks.

The Top 6 Denial Reasons (In Order of Frequency)

  1. Missing card last-4 on the receipt: The #1 denial trigger. Every receipt must show the last 4 digits of the card used. Most online retailers and small vendors don't include this automatically.
  2. No educational benefit description: For enrichment items (music, sports, garden supplies), you must document WHY the purchase benefits your child's education. "Piano lessons" isn't enough. Specific language about educational value is required.
  3. Purchase made before SLP approval: Any receipt dated before your SLP was approved is automatically ineligible, no exceptions.
  4. Provider not approved or not registered: Some vendors must be registered with Step Up or your SFO before you can claim their services.
  5. Categorically ineligible item: Laptops (PEP only), live online classes, paying yourself to teach, and out-of-state services are common denials.
  6. Services delivered outside Florida: PEP requires services to be rendered in Florida.

If You Were Denied

Denials are not always final. For documentation issues, you can often appeal and resubmit with the corrected materials. See our step-by-step guide on how to appeal a PEP reimbursement denial.

🛡️

The best time to catch a denial reason is before you submit, not after 60 days of waiting. Florida PEP Tracker's pre-submission checklist flags your most likely denial triggers so you fix issues before Step Up ever sees your request.
